GALA 2009
On Monday, April 7th, over 450 of Roundabout's closest friends came together celebrate the heyday of big bands and classic songs in New York City at our 2009 Spring Gala, Take Me Back to Manhattan. Inspired by this season's production of Pal Joey, Roundabout transformed Roseland Ballroom into a swanky nightclub of the 1930s and 40s with a gourmet dinner provided by Creative Edge Caterers. For one night only, Roundabout recaptured this golden age with striking décor, and the highlight of the evening was an original musical revue created by Tony Award-winner Kathleen Marshall, director and choreographer of The Pajama Game and Grease, featuring the music of the day's great composers: Rodgers, Porter, Arlen, Berlin, Ellington, Gershwin and so many more. Broadway's hottest stars performed including Kelli O'Hara, Boyd Gaines, Jane Krakowski, Audra McDonald, Mario Cantone, Martha Plimpton, Edie Falco, Steve Kazee, Laura Osnes, Cheyenne Jackson and Brooke Shields, backed up by a spectacular band led by Musical Director David Chase. They sang at terrific mix of songs that were products of that wonderfully creative era, including Someone to Watch Over Me, The Jitterbug, Stardust, Thanks for the Memories, and It Don't Mean a Thing if it Ain't Got That Swing.
The evening also honored Bank of America and Douglas Durst of the Durst Organization with the Jason Robards Award for Excellence in Theatre for their longstanding support of live theatre as well as their efforts to return the Henry Miller's Theatre to Broadway as part of the new Bank of America Tower at One Bryant Park.
Our deepest gratitude and heartiest congratulations go out to our Gala Chair, Lois Robbins, who has championed this fundraiser for us for the past three years. Once again, Lois proved to be an amazing leader and an inspiration to all of us at Roundabout, leading the Gala to net over $1.2 million! All proceeds from this event benefited Roundabout Theatre Company's Musical Theatre Fund.
